Hello, and welcome to my first blog. I'd like to take this opportunity to share the simple goal of this website - to talk about technology. More broadly, a channel to discuss the ever growing complexity of managing IT.

Ultimately, to share ideas and (hopefully) collaborate with like-minded individuals.

A Litte Bit About Me

It all started when was drawn to a computer from 12 years of age when my parents brought home an IBM 286. I guess it shows my age when the linked website classes this as belonging in a computer museum. With over 20 years of IT experience (and counting) my career has spanned many areas including:

  • Software Development & Support

  • Infrastructure / Applications Monitoring & Testing

  • Software Engineering & Architecture

  • Business Management & Executive Strategy

All of these have led me to uncovering my passion:

  • Developing Digital Strategies and Digital Operating Models ...

  • So that IT can continously improve to best serve the business (internally) ...

  • While simultaneously creating competitive advantage through innovation.

Why (Living) Working with Machines?

Depending on how you got here, you went straight to workingwithmachines.com, or were redirected from livingwithmachines.com. I chose both of these to reflect the reality of technology in today's world - that the line between living and working with machines is becoming increasingly blurred.

Technology is everywhere! In 2021, we are riding the wave of over 6.4 billion smartphones and more than 10 billion Internet of Things (IoT) devices. With these devices at our fingertips, our wrists, in our cars, even in our children's toys, the risks of IT continues to grow. Conversely, with omni-channel consumption, AI driven personalised services, and automation, the opportunities are endless. I'm sure I will dive into this more deeply in upcoming blogs.

Note: This site has no deliberate relationship to the Alan Turing Project - Living with Machines, however, it is a very interesting research project and well worth a look.

What's next

I've chosen to keep this first blog short, to get the site running. My hope is that over time I can introduce help share ideas, tips and tricks that have helped me in my 20 plus years in IT to date.
